Why I Accepted The Ultimate Blog Challenge!

The Ultimate Blog Challenge Should Kick Start this New Blog

Since A California Life is less than two weeks old,  I entered it in the Ultimate Blog Challenge to get it off to a good start. That means I will be posting every day in July. Many of my posts will be shorter than usual during the challenge. On Wordless Wednesday  you will see just photos and brief descriptions. I will also accept a few suggestions from the Ultimate Blog Challenge administrators. Today they suggested we explain how we got started blogging in our niches, so I am doing that today.

Why I Accepted The Ultimate Blog Challenge!

My niche is the California I know and love. I will show you the places you won’t see on tours, or if they are tourist attractions, I will offer a unique perspective on them. I will share mostly my own photos I snapped when I visited those places. I will bring you with me to my favorite places. Cachuma Lake, near Santa Barbara and pictured below, is one place I will take you in a future post.

Why Is My Favorite Blogging Niche California?

California is a large part of who I am. I was born here. I grew up here. I went to college at UCLA. I have spent my entire life here, with a few forays into the rest of the world. I know the good, the bad, and the ugly about this state. I embrace what’s good and beautiful. I try to change what’s hurting California. In this blog I will focus on what’s beautiful and uplifting — the places I would like to take you if I could.

One of those places is Alice Keck Memorial Park Gardens in Santa Barbara. My husband is standing near one of the benches there in the photo below. The garden is labeled like a botanical garden so you can know what you are seeing. There is a koi pond with turtles, ducks, and swans. There are huge trees in  an assortment of shapes, with homeless people taking shelter under them. There is also an assortment of plants in bloom to add color. One could make several posts just on this one park.

You will also see a lot of scenes from California wine country in future posts. You can’t drive for more than five minutes in my hometown without seeing a vineyard or tasting room. Usually they are together. I will take you right into the vineyards during every season of the year and during harvest. Ever wonder how that wine gets into the bottles? I’ll show you. Have you seen a harvest? You will. Want to meet the winery cats and dogs? I’ll introduce you. You can meet Peaches and Herbie from Peachy Canyon Winery in the friendship card below. I took their pictures during visit to the tasting room, but they will often greet visitors who are on their way in. The scenes in the rest of the featured products are scenes I pass on my way to and from home when I go to town.

My home is quite near the coast. We are within an hour’s drive of at least eight beaches, and most are closer. I’ve only explored about six of them so far. My favorite is Moonstone Beach in Cambria, but I’ve also visited Avila, Pismo Beach, Cayucos, Morro Bay and San Simeon State Beach. Each beach town has its unique character. Below is a shot from Pismo Beach. Although I don’t swim or surf in the ocean or sunbathe on the beaches, I can’t imagine not being near the ocean. That is also part of who I am.

The Ultimate Challenge for This Blog

My ultimate blog challenge will be to show you all the beauty I’ve seen during my life and my travels through California. I hope you will come with me around my state. We’ve many miles to cover before I reach the end of my journey. Thank you for coming along. I have many more photos than I can ever put into this blog. About once a month I will be sending extra photos to those who use the form in the sidebar to subscribe to my California news and extra photos. If there are special places you’d like me to write about, please leave your suggestions in the comments below.

If you’ve enjoyed my photos here, please share. The sharing buttons are below. This last photo is designed for Pinterest if you’d like to pin it. It was taken from Alice Keck Memorial Park in Santa Barbara. The park occupies one city block, a short walk from State Street. I discovered it when I was killing time while my husband was finalizing some real estate details in an office on State Street. The church steeple belongs to Our Lady of Sorrows Church across the street from the park.

I do love my state, Susan, warts and all. I hope everyone loves their own state as much as I love mine.

I noticed you are. I’m tired, too. I like to work ahead and the tips come too late for me to use the day they are sent. Let’s hope this challenge helps both of us and the others who have taken it up.

Thank you Karen. I will probably share most about the middle of the state, the Central Coast — my part of California, but I also get to other parts of the state.

Wow! It’s interesting to learn about a place you’ve never been to. Except for the fruits we buy at our local stores here in Canada that come from your place, I haven’t had a glimpse of your place. I know it’s a lovely place and so much to see and do.

Thanks for your post and lovely images!

Great Pics and interesting decryptions of CA. We’ve visited Long Beach, San Diego, Malibu and driven north on the Pacific Coast Highway to Oregon and through the Redwoods. It’s a beautiful state. Looking forward to seeing more of your pics and reading your blog.

Thanks for letting me show you more of California. I lived in Long Beach for a few years and taught there. We almost bought a house in Malibu once, and I love San Diego. In 1988, my husband got a contract with Boeing near Seattle, and I drove back and forth from California to Seattle at least five times between April and July. It’s a beautiful drive, and I always loved seeing Mt. Shasta as we passed.
